The flap about Differentiated Instruction published in Education Week Teacher, where Schmoker denounced its value to students since there was no “empirical research” supporting its use. I was pleased that Carol Ann Tomlinson was quick to fire back a response. Carol Ann’s work and the work of her colleagues at UVA help us to understand that the benefits of students when their teacher masters the protocols and artistry necessary to effectively differentiate curricula are immense.
Our own research preceding our launch of Power of Teaching also revealed incredible instructional “power” in the uses of differentiated teaching.
Schmoker has presented our profession with other fine materials. He should revisit this topic and defer to folks at UVA who have provided us so much on this topic.
