Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix discussed his company’s employee vacation policy. “It’s simple and understandable: We don’t have one. We focus on what people get done, not on how many days they worked.”
At Distinctive Schools, we launched our schools management organization with this policy. When you plan a vacation, plan your time away with your boss. Hastings, who also has equity in a neat education company, Dreambox Learning, suggests that “[t]his requires thoughtful, mature high-performance employees”.
More than a decade ago, when I was serving as the chief executive of eSchool Solutions, we had the same employee vacation policy–no vacation plan stipulated. Plan your time away with your boss and coordinate your work accordingly. The result was that we had to coach and counsel employees to actually make time for vacation and their time away.
Interesting are the paradigms we foster and how counter-productive they can be.
Watch the results at Distinctive Schools. I’m betting big on this team, and what we accomplish for kids-all our kids. Final 2011-12 testing results will be out soon.
