Low Income Households and Education in Illinois

More than half (52%) of all Illinois students are now classified as low income ($44,000 household income or less a year for a family of 4). In 2000, 37% of kids qualified for free and reduced lunch in the state of Illinois. Chicago’s percentage of kids living in low income households is 85%. The greatest rise in low income households is in the suburbs and downstate, making up 2/3 of low incomes kids in the state.
