HIVE NYC’s Global Kids program teachers middle school students how to design and code for mobile games based on things like their neighborhood culture or historical figures, while discussing related contemporary issues. The program is part of an initiative that integrates international and public policy issues into digital media programs to promote global awareness, civic participation and develop 21st century skills. The program teaches students transferable skills in computer programming that will be near mandatory as the century progresses further into the digital age. The approach to teaching code allows for students to get creative by writing stories and designing the look of their games. Although logic, reason and math are required to write code the entire process is creative and open ended merging traditionally mono-focused subject areas into project based learning.
